playa de chernobil

I had to ride my hired clunker back to the rental shop after 3 minutes because the seat was low and my knees were around my shoulders. there are a lot of tourists in Barcelona; you pass many suffering the curse of the low-seated hire-bike. I rode north and came across a hovering cube wrapped in easter-egg foil by Herzog & de Meuron. I didn’t take any photos because it’s quite ugly but I walked around, feeling like an architecture student and trying (failing) to understand whether or why this was a special building other than that I recognised the Swiss name. further north I passed a Zaha Hadid building site and resisted taking photos of her steel reinforcement, curing concrete slabs and Catalan dust.
here is the industrial monument at Playa de Chernobil, next to a river called El Besós (the most contaminated river in Europe in the 1980s) and forming an architectural gateway between Barcelona and Badelona. I remembered this triple-stack from Dania’s photo but hadn’t known it would be there suddenly on the axis of my cycle route, what a treat after those ghastly contemporary contributions.
